“Porgy and Bess” (Columbia CS-8085) rappresenta il secondo concept album realizzato da Miles Davis con Gil Evans. I due avevano infatti già lavorato insieme alla fine deli anni Quaranta per "Birth of the Cool" e nel 1957 per “Miles Ahead”. Registrato nel 1958, l’album propone ovviamente la famosa opera di Gershwin e vede Miles accompagnato da un big band diretta da Gil Evans e da alcuni dei suoi collaboratori abituali come Julian “Cannonball” Adderley, Paul Chambers, Philly Joe Jones e Jimmy Cobb alla batteria.
